In response to the updated standard (EN 474 series) requiring protective measures for site dumpers with operating masses between 3,500 and 4,500 tonnes to safeguard operators in roll or tip-over scenarios, Xwatch, a part of Hexagon, has collaborated with Explore Plant and Transport Solutions and Trackunit to create a pioneering safety system. This innovative solution, known as the Xwatch Simple Safe Two Series Roll Over Monitor, integrates seamlessly with Trackunit’s telematics system, providing a holistic approach to dumper safety that complies with and exceeds current standards.
The Xwatch system is designed to actively monitor the operational dynamics of the dumper, issuing early warnings to the operator via Trackunit’s telematics about potential pitch and roll situations. This is crucial as it alerts the operator before reaching critical limits set by the manufacturer, enhancing the preventative safety measures. In the event of an actual rollover, the Xwatch system takes immediate action by shutting down the engine, thereby halting further operation of the machine, which helps prevent engine damage and mitigates other risks on the site. The integration with Trackunit allows for the immediate transmission of real-time data regarding such events, facilitating a quick response and shifting from reactive to proactive safety management.
This collaboration among Xwatch Safety Systems, Trackunit, and Explore Plant has been recognized for its innovative approach, with their combined system being shortlisted for the Plantworx 2023 Innovation Award in the Safety Category. Previously, the standard required cabs only for dumpers with an operating mass greater than 4,500 tonnes.
The revised versions of the standard will now require that dumpers with an operating mass between 3,500 and 4,500 tonnes have a means to prevent operator injury during a roll or tip-over, although not specifically requiring a cab.
Requirements for different mass categories:
For dumpers over 4,500 tonnes, cabs are still required.
For dumpers between 3,500 and 4,500 tonnes, a protective measure (not necessarily a cab) is required to prevent operator injury in case of a roll or tip-over.
